Italy through Instagram (Part 1)

Yesterday, I landed in Rome in the morning and roamed around before meeting up with my best friend who flew into the city in the evening. Then we took a 2-hour train to Viterbo where we stayed for the night and adventured around today. If you follow me on Instagram or Tumblr, you may have already seen some of these photos. The first four are in Rome and the last two are from Viterbo.

1. Did not sleep at all on the plane because of the time difference, so I was pretty delirious once I got in, but I was awake to witness the intensely gorgeous sunrise right when we got into Italy.
2. Train schedule flipboard at Roma Termini, the central train station in Rome.
3. Charming narrow alleyway lined with scooters.
4. I love this ivy-covered wall.. want to live in a building like that.
5. Morning ritual of a caffe latte and espresso at Blitz Caffe in Viterbo.
6. Cattedrale di San Lorenzo, a 13th century cathedral. Insane to be standing on grounds so old.

Took 400+ photos on my DSLR already and it's only been two days... so definitely more to come!

Travel Tips: Packing for Italy

Quick post so I can get like three hours of sleep before my flight to Rome early in the morning. Anyway, I've gotten some travel questions, like what to wear while flying, so I thought I'd just do a post on it. This outfit is literally what I'll be wearing for the brutal 18-hour flight tomorrow.

1. Plush fleece-lined tights. I always wear some form of stretchy/comfy pants, these are fleece-lined and so comfortable.
2. Zara oversized sweater dress (similar). Usually I do layers in case it's hot/cold so I can adjust, but I get cold on flights so a big blanket-esque sweater is a warm cocoon to be cuddled up in.
3. Zara over-the-knee boots (similar). When traveling in the summer I wear flats because they're easy to get in and out of through the security line, but in order to save room/weight in my luggage, I'm wearing my heaviest boots. I take my shoes off once I'm seated anyway.
4. H&M infinity scarf (similar). Something colorful to brighten up the outfit, and this snood is seriously massive I can wrap it around three times, even though it kind of looks like a neck brace, but it's so warm!
5. Glasses. I carry a pair of daily contacts in my cosmetics bag so I can pop them in right before landing, but definitely not going to dry my eyes out wearing them during the whole flight.
6. iPad loaded with books, movies, Angry Birds...

Walk on down the hill through grass grown tall and brown

Wilfred slouch cardigan, Twenty8Twelve jeans, Topshop boots

To all my US readers, hope you had a happy Thanksgiving yesterday! I started feasting on leftovers the moment I got home last night from dinner with my bf's family and am slowly grazing throughout today.. can never get too much mashed potatoes and gravy nom nom. Anyway, I've been looking for burgundy jeans and found this pair on a super deal on Outnet. It's my favorite colored pant for fall/winter, goes with all the black and grays I've been wearing.

I'm the one who has got your back, now turn around and don't be sad

Zara sweater dress, Plush fleece-lined tights, Dries Van Noten boots

How have I lived without these tights in my life for so long?? They're soo cozy and warm, that inner layer of fleece makes all the difference but is thin enough to not add bulk to your legs. It's the solution (that, and over the knee boots.. just trying to cover as much surface area as possible) for the injustice of previously exposing my lower body to the cold elements by wearing mere opaque tights, all the while my torso is covered in thick knit sweater dresses.. no more! Legs are now demanding fleece, and fleece they will get. I'm definitely bringing these tights to Europe.. which is coming up so soon, I'm leaving in exactly a week!

Hey Pretty Thing x Michael Kors (part 5)

This is the last photoset of the series I shot for Michael Kors at their store in Bellevue Square (see the rest of the posts here). The stylist put this outfit together, and it's fun that it's different from my usual style. The beige/khaki/cream color palette is a more fall-appropriate and muted version of a clean, all white look for after Labor Day.

We all want to be somebody's one and only, we all want to be warm when it's cold

Zara sweater, Blank leather leggings, Givenchy lace up boots

When the weather gets cold, I'm really more focused on simplicity and not having to worry about tons of components in an outfit, so a b&w color palette is golden. I've always liked the pairing of two very different textures like a thick knit with leather, it adds edge to an otherwise kind of frumpy grandma look (though I'm sometimes into that). I also like the illusion of leather skinnies that run into leather boots almost seamlessly. Before fall started I went on an oversized sweater shopping rampage to stock up (it's like the idea of buying canned foods in prep of catastrophe but on a totally minuscule scale), and this and a few others from Zara have been keeping me mighty warm.

Extraordinary Desserts - San Diego, CA

Cutout denim shirt from Singapore (similar), Rag & Bone jeggings, Rebecca Minkoff booties, Gap neon belt (similar), Marc Jacobs bag

I have a second stomach for dessert, it's just a weird undiagnosed science (fiction) type thing that I'm completely convinced about. No matter how full, I always like to at least look at the dessert menu.. see if anything is intriguing.. Anyway, when I went to Extraordinary Desserts last month in San Diego I wish I had multiple stomachs like a cow (really classy lady-like simile). Every pastry was so beautifully made and garnished with extravagant details like edible gold flakes and flowers. I had Vietnamese iced coffee (which I equate to liquid dessert.. espresso with condensed milk? Nice try passing off as coffee) and a caramelized apple salted caramel crème brûlée tart with homemade brown sugar ice cream.

Angkor Wat - Siem Reap, Cambodia

Surface to Air shirt, Forever 21 maxi dress, Twelfth Street by Cynthia Vincent sandals, Topshop earrings

I'm a little late on posting these photos from the Cambodia leg of our Southeast Asia trip in August. On this day, we woke up at 4am to see the sunrise over Angkor Wat (maybe made more widely known as a location in Tomb Raider). Waiting in the dark for the temple to be lit up, taking our time exploring all the grandeur temples, and pouring over the details carved into the stone... incredible experience. Over the centuries, massive trees have grown over some of the temples, it's really a sight to see the man-made and the natural so powerfully intertwined. Thankful to have seen this in my lifetime.

Hey Pretty Thing x Michael Kors (part 4)

Here's the fourth installment of the photoshoot I did with Michael Kors at their store in Bellevue Square. I like the styling of the double watches.. that lucite one is killer. Anyway, I have a hair appointment today to finally make sense of my bangs that have been uncooperative for a while (even though I'm convinced that is the general unruly nature of bangs). I'm leaning toward getting them chopped up to the likeness of Freja Beha's messy effortless bangs.. we'll see how that turns out. Happy Friday!

Oola

H&M denim shirt, Rag & Bone leather panel skirt, Topshop boots

I got the Topshop Ambush boots on a rare occasion when they were back in stock. They're comfy and I like the look of the double zipper, and as expected, they're a part of my lazy go-to uniform. The camel, Giuseppe Zanotti-esque black glitter and silver glitter, and leopard pairs are tempting.. must exert some effort of retail self-control here.
