2-Day Itinerary: Redwood National and State Parks Road Trip [Day 2]

Go here to see Day 1 of our 2-Day Redwood National and State Parks Road Trip Itinerary where we visited Muir Woods National Monument, Chandelier Drive-Thru Tree, and Avenue of the Giants. We stayed overnight in the coastal city of Eureka, and headed out to a couple nearby hikes on Day 2.

Day 2

11am – We leisurely started the morning by going into town for some coffee and smoothies. Since we don’t live near an In-N-Out, we went there to fuel up for our day of hiking ahead haha.

Yurok Loop Trail

12pm – Yurok Loop Trail is a little over an hour north of Eureka. You could go straight through to the beach, or take the Coastal Trail, which is a very mild hike with spectacular ocean views. There are no redwoods on this trail, but you’ll see lots of Douglas Fir and Sitka Spruce, wildflowers, and more.

Fern Canyon

2pm – From Yurok Loop Trail, we drove an hour to Fern Canyon, which is a must visit! The hike is about a mile, and you’re surrounded by lush greenery and ferns growing in a 50-foot-deep vertical walled canyon. It feels like being transported to ancient times when nature was king. I recommend waterproof footwear as you’re hiking on gravel, through streams, and over logs. It was such a fun experience! You can drive or hike in, but if you drive in, make sure your car can get through streams and lots of holes and bumps.

Cool fact: If Fern Canyon looks familiar, it’s because it was used for several scenes in the movie Jurassic Park 2: Lost Worlds (1997) and the BBC series Walking with Dinosaurs (2000)!

Eureka

5pm – We got back to Eureka early enough to chill at Redwood Brewing Co. for a few beers before going to LoCo Fish Co. for crispy fish tacos and fish & chips.
